Rachel Carson's Silent Spring A Hilton M. Briggs Resource Guide | Background | Books | Other Library Sources | Web Sites | Search Terms/Electronic Resources | Background In 1962, Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, a book that brought pesticide use and humankind's relationship with nature to the forefront of the national consciousness. Carson combined scientific information with an emotional element, her love and regard for the natural world. This proved a powerful combination. Silent Spring has been translated into 22 languages and is still widely read. Many consider the book a pivotal turning point in the modern environmental movement. A Sense of Wonder, a film based on a stage play about Rachel Carson's reflections on publishing Silent Spring, will be shown Tuesday 10 February, 7 p.m., at the Art Museum Alumni Auditorium at South Dakota State University. The film is part of SDSU's Spring 2009 Film Series and SDSU's Year of Science activities. The following is a list of selected resources for those interested in further exploration of the topic.
