The following databases and paper indexing and abstracting publications may be used to locate articles relevant to veterinary science in journals, magazines, conference proceedings, books, and other sources.  Contact a librarian (688-5570 or 800-786-2038) for more information or if off-campus access is denied to a current SDSU student, faculty member, or staff member.

Databases

AGRICOLA. 1970+ (Also accessible via the National Agricultural Library at www.nalusda.gov). This index, also known as the Bibliography of Agriculture, is published by the National Agricultural Library. It is an extremely comprehensive guide to scholarly information on all agricultural topics. The NAL Agricultural Thesaurus lists terms that are used to index agricultural resources. Older agricultural literature can be identified using the paper volumes of the Bibliography of Agriculture (1942-1969) shelved on the lower level (630.35061 .Un3.01).

Biological Abstracts. A complete collection of bibliographic references covering life science and biomedical research literature published from more than 4,000 journals internationally. This database contains more than 10 million archival records from as far back as 1969, with more than 370,000 citations added each year. Older agricultural literature can be identified using the paper volumes of Biological Abstracts (1926-2000) shelved on the lower level at 570.5 B52.

Biological Sciences Database. 1982+ This interdisciplinary database offers abstracts and citations to a wide range of research in biomedicine, biotechnology, zoology and ecology, and some aspects of agriculture and veterinary science. Supporting over two dozen areas of expertise, this CSA database provides access to literature from over 6000 serials, as well as conference proceedings, technical reports, monographs and selected books and patents.

CAB Abstracts. 1984+ The CAB Abstracts database, compiled by CAB INTERNATIONAL, covers the significant research and development literature in the fields of agriculture, forestry, human health and nutrition, animal health, and the management and conservation of natural resources. Journals, monographs, conferences, books, annual reports, and other sources from more than 100 countries are scanned regularly for inclusion in the CAB Abstracts database.

Current Contents. 1993+ This multidisciplinary, current awareness resource provides indexing and tables of contents to over 6,000 journals covering a broad range of disciplines. Many clinical and social/behavioral journals are included in this database. 

Dissertation Abstracts International. 1861+ A database that provides a subject, title, and author guide to over 2.2 million doctoral dissertations and masters theses.

Medline.  1997+ (Also accessible via the National Library of Medicine at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/) Also known as Index Medicus, this comprehensive index to the world's medical literature is published by the National Library of Medicine. A print version covering the years 1945 to 1997 is shelved with the government documents on the lower level of the library.

Web of Science. 1992+ Also known as Science Citation Index, this multidisciplinary database of citations and abstracts from journal literature can be used as a conventional author-subject index, or it can be searched by cited author or paper. Access this CD-ROM database on a specific workstation in the reference area the library. Prior years (1965-1990) are available in paper at Abstracts 016.5 .Sci27

Paper Resources

Index Veterinarius. 1958-1998. (Lower Level 619.05 In3)  Index Veterinarius is a subject and author index to the world's veterinary literature. References are given to abstracts published in Veterinary Bulletin. CAB Abstracts is the electronic version of this index. 

Veterinary Bulletin. 1946-1997. (Lower Level 619.05 V641)  This monthly publication provides abstracts of the core literature in the animal health field. CAB Abstracts is the electronic version of this index.   

Zoological Record 1915-2001  (Lower Level 016.59.Zo75) Comprehensive index to worldwide zoological publications.  27 separate sections by animal group, i.e. mammalia, insecta, etc.
