The World Wide Web (WWW) can provide access to much useful information.  However, users should check the authenticity of each Internet resource consulted.  A link to a list of WWW sites is provided below.  Also provided is a link to a list of WWW search engines that can be used to look for sites on the Internet.

Advertising

AdCritic.com - A searchable archive of recent ads in a variety of streaming video formats. 

adforum.com - A portal to the advertising, marketing and communications industry, with direct links to more than 16,697 agencies in 134 countries.

The Advertising Century - Lists from Advertising Age of  the century's top 100 campaigns, people, jingles, slogans, and ad icons.

Advertising World - A collection of resources for advertising & marketing professionals, students, and teachers. Sponsored by the University of Texas.

Agency ComPile - An international directory of marketing communications agencies on the Web.

The Emergence of Advertising in America: 1850-1920 - A collection of "over 9,000 images, with database information, relating to the early history of advertising in the United States."

The Journal of Advertising - "The Journal of Advertising is published to contribute to the development of advertising theory and its relationship to advertising practices and processes."

Freedom of Information

1st Amendment Online - From the University of Minnesota Law School, this site is "dedicated to publicly accessible information, ideas, and images concerning the First Amendment to the United States Constitution."

AP and Freedom of Information - From the Associated Press.

Central Intelligence Agency's Electronic Reading Room - Provides the public with an overview of access to CIA information, including electronic access to previously released documents.

freedominfo.org - A network of resources relating to the freedom of information around the world. 

Legal Threats Database - Citizen Media Law Project's database of legal threats that have been directed at those who engage in online speech. The database contains lawsuits, cease & desist letters, subpoenas, and other legal threats.

National Freedom of Information Center

The Free Expression Policy Project - Founded in 2000, FERP provides research and advocacy on free speech, copyright, and media democracy issues. In May 2004, FEPP became part of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law.

Project Censored - "The Primary Objective of Project Censored is to explore and publicize the extent of censorship in our society by locating stories about significant issues of which the public should be aware, but is not, for one reason or another. Thereby, the project hopes to stimulate responsible journalists to provide more mass media coverage of those issues and to encourage the general public to demand mass media coverage of those issues or to seek information from other sources."

Government and Politics 

Campaigns & Elections Magazine - Provides information for local, state and federal political candidates, campaign staffs, PACs, party activists and political consultants on the trends, strategies and techniques of modern candidate and issue campaigning.

CongressLink - Developed by The Dirksen Congressional Center, CongressLink helps teachers and students of government, civics, and history explore new ways to learn about Congress, how it works, its Constitutional underpinnings, its leaders and members, and the public policies it produces.

Opensecrets.org - Sponsored by the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan, non-profit research group that tracks money in politics, and its effect on elections and public policy. 

Political Information (.com) - A targeted search engine for politics, policy and political news. 

POTUS (Presidents of the United States) - Provides background information, election results, cabinet members, notable events, and some points of interest on each of the presidents. Also contains links to biographies, historical documents, audio and video files, and other presidential sites.

Project Vote Smart - A national library of factual information on 40,000 candidates for public office at national, state, and local levels. Includes a database on candidates and issues, searchable presidential campaign speeches, and full text publications. 

State and Local Government on the Net - A frequently updated directory of links to government sponsored and controlled resources on the Internet. 

THOMAS: Legislative Information on the Internet - A collection of legislative databases such as bills, public laws, and committee information for the U.S. Congress. Maintained by the Library of Congress.

U.S. Congress Votes Database - From the Washington Post, a database of every vote in the United States Congress since 1991.

Journalism Sites

Acronym Finder - A searchable database of more than 201,000 abbreviations and acronyms about computers, technology, telecommunications, and military acronyms and abbreviations.

AJR - American Journalist Review, a national magazine that covers all aspects of print, television, radio and online media. The magazine is owned by the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland.

BuzzWhack - With a combination of humor and education, this site demystifies buzzwords.

Committee to Protect Journalists - "A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to the global defense or press freedom."

CyberJournalism.net - From the Media Center at the American Press Institute

E&P Media Links - A database that allows users to search for media web sites or to browse media web sites by media category or geographic region.

Ejournalist - A refereed media journal.

Annenberg Political Fact Check - A nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that monitors the accuracy of information presented by major politicians and candidates in advertisements, speeches, debates, and interviews.

FACSNET - Sponsored by FACS, an independent, nonprofit educational organization, the site contains supplemental material based on subjects taught at FACS conferences and seminars, in addition to background information and resources that are useful to journalists working on deadline. 

FAIR - Fairness & Accuracy in Report, a national media watch group

Global Journalist - This magazine reports on the state of press freedom around the world, covers developments in international journalism and serves international journalists. It is produced by students at the University of Missouri's School of Journalism.

Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc.  - IRE is a "grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting within the field of journalism."

Journalism Resources - Compiled and edited by Karla Tonella, University of Iowa. The page contains numerous links to journalism-related sites.

JournalismNet - Billed as a " working journalist's guide to the Net," this site contains " 300 different web pages with over 6,000 links designed to help journalists (and anyone else) find useful information fast." 

Journalism.org - The joint Internet presence of the Project for Excellence in Journalism and the Committee of Concerned Journalists. Designed to be a portal and a utility for people interested in journalism. The site offers a catalog of tools, techniques and ideas, lists of principles, empirical research, links to other journalism sites, job links, compilations of ethics codes and many other resources.

A Journalist's Guide to the Internet - Created and maintained by Christopher Callahan, Associate Dean of Journalism, University of Maryland. A compilation of numerous sites that are of interest and use to journalists.

Journalists' Toolkit - From Mediachannel.org, this site contains numerous links to pages for journalists. Some of the main categories include professional development, writing guides, research, and ethical/legal.

Live Radio on the Internet - Links  to thousands of radio stations worldwide. With the appropriate software, users can use the site to listen to any of the radio stations.

Media Literacy Review - From the University of Oregon's College of Education, the Media Literacy Review is a bi-annual online resource for educators and others interested in children,
adolescents, and media. 

Media Resource - A connection between science and the media that provides help for journalists in locating expert sources of information on science and technology to interview for news and feature stories.

MediaStudies.com - This site "helps advance research and education in media studies and critical thinking.  The site is a hub - providing links to news, media studies sites, and other resources for educators, students, researchers, and the wider community."

MEDIAWEEK.COM - The online news magazine of the media. 

NewsDesigner.com - A blog about newspaper design with links to the front pages of many newspapers.

NewsLink - Published by NewsLink Associates, an online research and consulting firm, the site contains links to numerous newspaper and radio web pages. The JobLink portion of the site provides a searchable database of job openings as well as space for job hunters to post resumes. 

Newspaper History - The British Library Newspaper Library, the national archive collections in the United Kingdom of British and overseas newspapers. Provides links to sites about newspaper history.

National Institute for Computer Assisted Reporting - "NICAR is a program of Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. and the Missouri School of Journalism. Founded in 1989, NICAR has trained thousands of journalists in the practical skills of finding, prying loose and analyzing electronic information."

ObitsArchive.com - "The largest and most comprehensive collection of newspaper obituaries and death notices in the United States." Searchable by the name of the deceased person, in addition to full-text searching of all obituaries.

Opinion-Pages - Provides access to editorials, opinions, commentaries and columnists from English newspapers and magazines. 

Pew Center for Civic Journalism - Created by The Pew Charitable Trusts to help stimulate citizen involvement in community issues. "The project helps print and broadcast news organizations experiment with ways to reconnect to their communities and engage their citizens in dialogue and problem solving."

Power Reporting: Resources for Journalists - Contains links to thousands of free research tools for journalists, annotated and updated daily. 

Poynter.org - "Poynter.org exists to help journalists do their jobs better and to serve their communities. Updated daily, it provides journalists with reliable information, useful tools, and provocative suggestions. The site advances the goals of The Poynter Institute by making accessible worldwide our teaching, expertise, and research."

PublicRecordFinder.com - A directory of free state, national, and worldwide public records. 

Radio Locator - A search engine for radio stations with links to over 10,000 radio station web pages and over 2500 audio streams from radio stations in the U.S. and around the world.

Regret the Error - This site reports on corrections, retractions, clarifications and trends regarding accuracy and honesty in the media.

Reporter's Desktop - A starting point for locating information on the web. The site contains links to resources such as search engines, yellow/white pages, discussion groups, news archives, and other reporting links.

Reporters without Borders - An organization that is working for freedom of the press in all nations.

ResearchBuzz - A general site for Internet research. Updated frequently with information on search engines, browser technology, large compendiums of information, etc.

RobertNiles.com - Created and maintained by journalist and mathematician Robert Niles, this page offers starting points such as "Finding Data on the Internet", "Statistics Every Writer Should Know," and "Questions to Ask a Candidate" in addition to links to numerous other sites.

Scout Report - Published weekly on the web and via e-mail, the Scout Report provides a mechanism to stay informed of Internet resources. It is compiled by librarians and subject matter experts. The Internet Scout Project is located in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. 

Society of Professional Journalists: Code of Ethics - Principles and standards of practice as adopted by the memebers of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Statistical Resources on the Web - Created by the Documents Center at the University of Michigan, this page lists over twenty categories and provides links to relevant statistical sites for each.

TVEyes - A free service that allows keyword searching of radio and television news.

United State Early Radio History - Contains articles and extracts about early radio and related technologies, concentrating on the United States in the period from 1897 to 1927.

Voice of America's Pronunciation Guide 

Writers Manual - A promotional site for freelance writers and their works. 

Law

The Constitution of the United States of America - Analysis and interpretation of cases decided by the Supreme Court of the United States. Prepared by the Congressional Research Service, Library of Congress. 

FindLaw - A web portal focused on law and government, provides access to an extensive online library of legal resources for use by legal professionals, consumers and small businesses. FindLaw's mission is to make legal information on the Internet easy to find.

HeadlineSpot - A guide to thousands of U.S. and international news resources on the Web.

Home Town News - Links to all daily and weekly newspapers in the U.S. that have a website.

1stHeadlines - Allows users to scan headlines from numerous news sources. Provides links to sites containing stories.

Kidon Media-Link - An independent site on that "tries to give a complete directory of newspapers and other news sources on the internet."

Metagrid - A database of magazines and newspapers on the web. Magazines are arranged by subject. Newspapers are arranged by geographical area.

NewsDirectory.com - A free directory of newspapers, magazines, television stations, colleges, visitor bureaus, and governmental agencies.

Newsfilm Library - A collection of news film at the University of South Carolina. Still images and film clips from the collection may be viewed online. 

NewsTrawler - A meta search engine that searches the archives of hundreds of news archives on the web.

Newsvine - Access to both established media outlets and individual contributors.

OnlineNewspapers.com - A title listing of U.S. and international newspapers. 

Television News Archive - This collection, owned by Vanderbilt University, is "the world's most extensive and complete archive of television news. The collection holds more than 30,000 individual network evening news broadcasts and more than 9,000 hours of special news-related programming." Video tapes can be loaned to individuals for research and educational uses.

Topix.net

U.S. News Archives on the Web - Links to United States news archives available on the web. Arranged by state. Searching is usually free, but there may be charges to retrieve stories.

WorldNews.com - An extensive collection of current news headlines from around the world. In addition to general news, the site covers many narrower areas such as business, environment, finance, health, politics, science, and sports.

World Newspapers - A searchable directory of English-language online newspapers, magazines, and news sites.

Photojournalism

The Convergent - An online magazine by the students of the Advanced Photojournalism class of the University of Texas at Austin.

The Digital Journalist - "A Multimedia Magazine for Photojournalism in the Digital Age."

Google Image Search - More than 250 million images indexed and available for viewing.

National Press Photographers Association

SportsShooter - A resource for sports photographers and other photojournalists. 

WarShooter - A portal for photojournalists covering conflict, crisis, and disaster.

World Press Photo - An independent, non-profit organization committed to supporting and promoting the work of professional press photographers worldwide. 

Public Opinion

The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research - The leading educational facility in the field of public opinion. The Center exists to promote the intelligent, responsible and imaginative use of public opinion in addressing the problems faced by Americans and citizens of other nations. 

The Pew Research Center For The People & The Press - An independent opinion research group that studies attitudes toward the press, politics and public policy issues.
