Conducting research as a distance education student via Briggs Library may seem to be a daunting task. However, many resources are available full text online as well as through our Distance Library services. To begin researching, start on the library home page: http://lib.sdstate.edu.
The library home page provides general information about the library and our services under “General”. “Quick Search” displays links to the Library Catalog (find books), the Magazines & Journals List (find periodicals by name), and three commonly used full text databases (find citations to articles). “Finding Information” provides links to additional resources including over 100 Research Databases, Research by Topic Guides, Quick Guides and Tutorials, and the Information Literacy & Research Guide.
“Research Databases” is an alphabetic list of

“Research by Topic Guides” provides an index of resources for research in specific disciplines. Each topic guide suggests research tools for databases, journals, books, and reviewed Web pages. Librarians have created these guides to assist you in more effective and efficient researching.
Quick Guides & Tutorials provide more in depth information about accessing and using specific databases. In addition, the guides include MLA & APA citation styles, finding library materials, evaluating information, and searching the Internet .
Information Literacy & Research Guide This guide addresses Goal #7 of the General Education Requirements established by the South Dakota Board of Regents: Goal #7: Students will recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, organize, critically evaluate, and effectively use information from a variety of sources with intellectual integrity. Students from all South Dakota public universities are required to meet this goal prior to graduation and are tested on five student learning outcomes. These learning outcomes are to be achieved through the curriculum of core university requirements and may be additionally enhanced through library instruction. |
