After being in the works for years, a renovation project on the Coughlin Campanile on the campus of South Dakota State University got underway Wednesday.

The project is part of SDSU's "Visions for the Future" campaign, which started in September 1997.

Through donations from nearly 4,000 alumni and businesses, the alumni association raised $540,000 to restore the Campanile.

The structure ... will undergo mortar work, have a portion of its limestone base replaced and have the globe on top replaced, according to V.J. Smith, director of the alumni association at SDSU.

Also, the inside of the tower will undergo a clean-up project, which involves resealing the windows.

When the restoration is complete in late fall, all four doors at the base will be accessible, Smith said. Currently, visitors can enter the structure through only one door.
