BACKGROUND NOTE

The Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design offers instruction leading to a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design.  Apparel Merchandising courses provide knowledge applicable to careers in the fashion industry including production, wholesaling and retailing, and for consumer acquisition and use of apparel and household textiles.  The cultural and scientific aspects of apparel and textiles are examined with emphasis on aesthetic, economic, historical, sociological and psychological factors.  The Interior Design curriculum prepares students to enter the profession of residential and commercial design through course work in technical, material, historical, cultural and aesthetic aspects of design with studios, emphasizing the design problem-solving process.

The Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design is affiliated with the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City.  Students may enroll in a "visiting scholar" program at FIT with emphasis on fashion design, fashion buying and merchandising, or several others.

SERIES II:     Adaline Snellman Hsia Historic Costume and Decorative Arts Collection records, 1963-2006

South Dakota State University is home to the Snellman Hsia Collection. The collection features over 3000 textiles, costumes, and accessories including those of the Alice Johnson Reifel Asian Art Collection and the Fisher Costume and Textile Collection. The diversity of the collection is represented by the Dona Brown Button Collection, the First Ladies of South Dakota Collection, the Mildred White Glass Collection, the Ardyce Gilbert Plate Collection and the Hinsvark Iron Collection.

The collection is used primarily by students majoring in Apparel Merchandising and enrolled in such classes as historic costume, apparel design, aesthetics of dress, and ready-to-wear analysis. Research by faculty and staff has resulted in presentations at regional, national, and international conferences.

The idea for a historic costume collection was conceived by Adaline Snellman Hsia, former Head of the Department of Textiles and Clothing, who envisioned a collection to be used primarily by students in historic costume and apparel design at South Dakota State University. The collection was initiated in 1963 by Adaline Snellman, when Mrs. Joe Foss donated a gown worn at her husband's inauguration as governor of South Dakota in 1954. Other inaugural gowns include those worn by Mrs. Hubert Humphrey and Mrs. George McGovern at the Inaugural Ball for President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

Earliest items include an 1840s hand-woven towel, a wedding dress worn in 1857, several Civil War era bonnets, and numerous mid-19th century children's clothes including an 1865 boy's dress, an 1870s day dress, and many late-19th century petticoats, drawers, and nightgowns. There are also several outstanding late-19th century capes and outerwear pieces.

Some of the most unique items in the collections include an 1896 original gown by French designer Charles Frederick Worth, an 1898 Spanish-American War Uniform, a 1908 brown plissé maternity gown worn by Mrs. Charles Pugsley when her husband was President of South Dakota State College, numerous 1920s mesh-and-beaded bags, 1950s designer suits, and 1960s paper dresses.

Specialized textiles include an 1822 hand woven coverlet, an 1850 pieced quilt, several 1860-1880s paisley shawls, crazy quilts from the 1890s, and many 1890s-1900s crocheted, tatted, and hand-embroidered table linens.

The Adaline Snellman Hsia Historic Costume and Decorative Arts Collection records series is composed mainly of correspondence, clippings, and photographs. Also included are typewritten histories of the collections. Some files may contain donation information, such as a description of the item donated and who donated the item.

Folders are arranged in alphabetical order.
