BACKGROUND NOTE

The first South Dakota State University course in journalism was taught in 1908.  By 1919, when the Board of Regents approved a School of Printing, the journalism classes were taught in the Agricultural Journalism Department.  By 1924, the overlap between the courses in journalism and the work of the School of Printing became obvious, and the Department of Printing and Rural Journalism was established.  In 1935, a two-year course in printing was approved under the Smith-Hughes Act, and the regular course work was expanded to a five-year program.

Following World War II, the department saw a rapid increase in enrollment, and a great demand for its services.  Expansion of these services continued throughout the next decade.  One of these expanded services was a laboratory newspaper.  Students received practical training in printing management through an apprenticeship at the Volga Tribune, owned by the State Dakota State University Alumni Association.  This continued until the early 1970's.

In 1946, the Board of Regents approved majors in journalism and printing journalism.  In 1948, the American Association of Schools and Department of Journalism accredited the program.  The South Dakota State University program, although small, was one of the first programs accredited by the association and it has retained accreditation through today.  In 1956, new degrees were offered in printing management and printing education and the course in Printing and Rural Journalism was shortened to four years.  A master's degree in printing management was offered from 1958-1972.

Since the 1970's, the work of the department has evolved.  Students may now receive either a BS of BA in journalism with a focus on one of the following:  advertising, broadcast journalism or new editorial.  Agricultural journalism is offered through a joint program of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences and the Department of Journalism.  The printing management degree was phased out in 1995.  Students are expected to graduate with knowledge of mass communications, journalism and the liberal arts, and are prepared for work in newspapers, magazines, radio and television.
