BACKGROUND NOTE Also known as Commercial Science, the Department of Commerce existed at South Dakota State University in the early 1900's and disappeared from college catalogs around 1903. The Department of Commerce included secretarial courses, and commercial, or business courses. The secretarial courses included business law, commercial methods (letter writing, filing, etc.), typewriting, money and banking, shorthand, accounting, and other general courses. The commercial courses included business methods, bookkeeping, shorthand, typewriting, business law, money and banking, business affairs, commerce and industry and other general courses. SCOPE AND CONTENTS NOTE This collection is composed of a pamphlet and an offprint from the college catalogue. ARRANGEMENT of the RECORDS This collection is composed a pamphlet produced by the Department of Commerce for business training for rural South Dakota and an offprint describing the Department of Commerce from the South Dakota State College catalogue.
