BACKGROUND NOTE
Courses related to
animal science have always been taught at South Dakota State
University. In the earliest years, livestock of all sorts was the
focus. Separate departments were often established for specific types
of animals, such as poultry. General courses were taught through other
departments as well. Over the years, specialization decreased, and
eventually the departments were combined. The focus of the department
was expanded to include management of rangeland.
The Department of
Animal and Range Sciences offers instruction leading to the BS degree
with majors in animal science or range science. The curriculum is
designed to prepare students for careers in livestock production,
related agriculture business enterprises, farming and ranching, natural
resource management on both private and public lands, or graduate study.
