BACKGROUND NOTE

Patterned after the Chicago International Livestock Exhibition, the Little International Agricultural Exposition was first held in 1921 in the Livestock Pavilion, now the Agricultural Heritage Museum.  It moved to the current Intramural building in 1952 and in 1997 made its final move to its present location in the Animal Science Arena.  Since it began, the event has been presented every year with only three exceptions.  In 1926, the scarlet fever epidemic forced its cancellation.  World War II prevented planning the event in 1944 and 1945.  The Little International is an entirely student-run exhibition.

During the first day of Little International, 4-H and Future Farmers of America [FFA] students compete in judging contests in the categories of crops, dairy products, range plant identification, livestock and meats.  Most of these students come from South Dakota and Minnesota, but each year the event draws more students from Nebraska, Iowa and North Dakota.

The Little International is always scheduled in early spring, prior to the FFA state judging contests in South Dakota and surrounding states.  That gives judging teams an opportunity to use Little International as preparation for their state competition.

The livestock fitting and showmanship competition is another main attraction that has students competing in beef, sheep, swine, horses and dairy.  A prize goes to the best all around showman.  The teaching and resource units at South Dakota State University provide all of the livestock that are shown.  Other competitions include lamb lead and agricultural sales.  Also included are agronomy exhibits where students display grain samples that are judges according to cleanliness and quality.
