BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1940, David Allan Evans went to college on a football scholarship, and by the time he graduated, he was writing poems and short stories.  He received a B.A. degree in English from Morningside College in Sioux City, an M.A. degree in the same subject from the University of Iowa two years later, and a M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Arkansas in 1976.  He has lived since 1968 in Brookings, where he is a professor of English and Writer-in-Residence at South Dakota State University.  He is the author of five books or poetry and the author or editor of seven other books, including Decent Dangers (2000), Hanging Out with the Crows (1991), What the Tallgrass Says (1982), and Remembering the Soos (1980).  In 1974 he was the first South Dakotan to receive a National Endowment for the Arts grant. He has received writing grants form the Bush Artist Foundation in St. Paul and the South Dakota Arts Council.  He was named Poet Laureate of South Dakota by Governor William Janklow in 2002.

 

His poems, short stories, and essays have been published in dozens of magazines and journals, including The New York Times, Kansas Quarterly, Prairie Schooner, Esquire, North American Review, and South Dakota Review, and in more than sixty anthologies.

 

He has been a Fulbright Scholar to China twice, once in Nanjing and once in Guangzhou.  He has done residencies for Arts Councils in South Dakota, Iowa, and Wyoming for over a quarter of a century.

In addition, David Evans is recognized as a committed and inspiring teacher, a friendly and helpful colleague, and an active participant in the scholarly community of South Dakota State University.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS NOTE

This collection is composed of manuscripts of poems. These manuscripts are early versions of poems and include notations by the author. Also included are a few clippings and an original musical score, Three poems for chorus, composed by M. William Karlins with lyrics written by David Allan Evans.
