BACKGROUND NOTE

Prior to 1960, administration of academic programs and issues at South Dakota State College was left to those departments or areas in need.  In 1960, the growing administrative duties were consolidated under the new position of Dean of Academic Affairs.  In 1973, this title was changed to Vice President of Academic Affairs.  This new title better reflected the position's importance in the university hierarchy.  A similar position, Vice President for Administration (formerly known as Assistant to the President), was created at the same time and is responsible for administrative offices and programs within the university.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs answers directly to the president of the university.  Deans of all colleges within the university answer directly to the Vice President.  These include Arts and Science, Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Family and Consumer Sciences, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, General Registration, Education and Counseling, and the Graduate School.  The Dean of Libraries also answers to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The purpose of this office is to deal with all aspects of academic affairs, including curriculum, faculty development, scholarship requirements, advising, honorary degrees, and dishonesty appeal.

The COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE and BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES series is composed of Institutional Program Reviews for departments and programs within the College of Agricultural and Biological Sciences. Folders are arranged alphabetically by program.

The COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES series is composed of Institutional Program Reviews for departments and programs within the College of Arts and Sciences. Folders are arranged alphabetically by program.

The COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND COUNSELING series is composed of Institutional Program Reviews for programs and departments within the College of Education and Counseling. Folders are arranged alphabetically by program.

The COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING series is composed of Institutional Program Reviews for programs and departments within the College of Engineering. Folders are arranged alphabetically by program.

The COLLEGE OF FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES series is composed of Institutional Program Reviews for programs and departments within the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Folders are arranged alphabetically by program.

The COLLEGE OF GENERAL REGISTRATION series is composed of the Institutional Program Reviews for the General Registration program within the College of General Registration. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order.

The COLLEGE OF NURSING series is composed of Institutional Program Reviews for the Nursing program within the College of Nursing. Folders are arranged chronologically.

The COLLEGE OF PHARMACY series is composed of Institutional Program Reviews for the Pharmacy program within the College of Pharmacy. Folders are arranged chronologically.

The DIVISION OF LIFELONG LEARNING AND OUTREACH series is composed of the Institutional Program Reviews for programs within the Division of Lifelong Learning and Outreach. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order

The SUMMARIES OF INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAM REVIEWS series is composed of yearly summaries of Institutional Program Reviews which were submitted to the Board of Regents.  Also included are planning documents for colleges. Folders are arranged alphabetically and there under alphabetically.

The DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS series is composed of a report the details financial aid, records, comparative date and health service areas of responsibility within the Division of Student Affairs. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order.
