BACKGROUND NOTE

In 1889, sixteen members of the graduating class met following commencement exercises to form the Dakota Agricultural College Alumni Association.  Those early graduates came together “for the purpose of preserving a feeling of unity and fellowship between the several graduates and for the purpose of cementing more closely the bonds existing between the alumni and their Alma Mater.”

Early in its history, only four-year graduates of the college were eligible for members in the Association.  In 1895, however, two-year pharmacy graduates with Ph.G. degrees became eligible to be non-voting, associate members.  Sometime later, students who had attended South Dakota State College for 18 months could become members by paying annual dues.

In 1910 the Alumnus (publication) was started.  With this addition and increasing membership, the Alumni Association became more effective.  Members of the association involved themselves in efforts to improve the college.  In the 1920s, the association successfully pushed for placing the proceeds from a cigarette tax into a building fund for higher education.  Lincoln Library was a direct result of these efforts.  The association also began to undertake its own fund-raising activities.

In 1922-23, the association drafted and adopted its first constitution.  The document outlined the group’s purpose, membership qualifications, officer duties, rules for meeting, guidelines for a quorum, provision for a trust fund and the by-laws of the organization.  This document, although amended and rewritten over the years, has remained largely the same.

The Alumni Association has undertaken many projects throughout the years.  The Coughlin Alumni Stadium, changing the name of South Dakota State College to South Dakota State University and rallying support to keep the College of Engineering at SDSU are among some of these projects.

The idea of a permanent, separate headquarters for the Alumni Association came about in the early 1970s.  On June 12, 1976, the Tompkins Alumni Center was dedicated during the Alumni Days summer reunion.  In 1982, a campaign was launched to construct a courtyard complete with a clock-bell tower to house the Old North clock and Old Central’s bell.  A monetary gift was received from the estate of Minnie Bylander in memory of her son.  The John Ervine Bylander Courtyard was completed in 1985 and dedicated in 1986.
