SELECTED SEARCH TERMS

Subjects:

  • Alton (S.D. : Township)—Politics and government.

  • Alton (S.D. : Township)—Records and correspondence.

BACKGROUND NOTE

The term "Township" has two meanings: (1) As a subdivision of land, which is known as Congressional or Government Township. (2) As a political unit which, is known as a Civil Political Township.  The Civil Townships usually coincide with the Congressional Township but do not always do so.

Each Congressional township has township number and a range number.  Civil townships sometimes have more than one of each if the township is oversized, or a combination of more than one township and range.

Theoretically, a township is a square tract of land with sides of six miles each, and containing 36 sections of land.  Actually, this is not the case.  When the original survey of this state was made by the government engineers, they knew that it was impossible to keep a true north and south direction of township lines, and still keep getting township squares of 36 square miles.  As they surveyed toward the North Pole, they were constantly running out of land, because the township lines were converging toward the North Pole.  The government surveyors adjusted for shortages of land by making fractional forties, eighties or government lots out of the land on the north side of a township to keep east and west lines running parallel.

Alton Township is located in Brookings County.  The township number is 110 N. and its range 48 W.  It is located east of the city of Brookings and includes the city of Bushnell, South Dakota.
