Interlibrary Loan Copyright
Policies and Procedures

For the most part these are for journal articles, chapters from books, or articles within a collected work (e.g. Source Readings in Music History).

  • CCG criteria (Copyright Compliance - Guidelines)

    • Starts over every January 1

    • Works published within the last 5 years

      • March 2009 = April 2004 - March 2009

      • April 2009 = May 2004 - April 2009

    • The first five articles from a journal title published in the above years fall under copyright guidelines, after this royalty fees must be paid

    • The first article per issue (not volume) of a journal (or chapter/article from a book) falls under copyright guidelines, after this royalty fees must be paid

      • If a single patron requests 2 articles from a single issue, one will fall under the copyright guidelines and the library will pay for the other.

      • If a single patron sends 3 or more requests from a single issue, we can try to borrow the whole issue (BRI, for example, will lend periodicals more than 6 months old) or send all the requests back with the copyright letter telling the patron how much each article above the two they get for free will cost.

    • Rule of 5 (Each calendar year we can request up to 5 articles published within the last 5 years from a given journal without paying a copyright fee to that publisher. This is a rule of thumb, not law.)

  • CCL criteria (Copyright Compliance - Law)

    • Anything published prior to the CCG years (see above criteria)

    • No royalty fees are paid on these materials, unless a single user requests more than one article from a single issue of a given journal within a calendar year.

  • CCC criteria (Copyright Clearance Center)

    • Article #6 or greater from a title published within the last five years (we have used up CCG for a particular title)

    • 2 or more articles from the same issue of a journal (or chapters/articles from a book)

    • Royalties will be paid through the Copyright Clearance Center whenever possible
