The following sources provide information relevant to nursing topics.  They are available in the Hilton M. Briggs Library collection or via the web as indicated.

Reference Books

AHA Guide to the Health Care Field. (Information Desk RA977 .A1A461)
Information on health care institutions, AHA, health organizations, and hospitals, etc.

American Nurses Association publications.
The library has a standing order for ANA publications including monographs (books and pamphlets) and journals. They can be located using the SDLN Catalog (South Dakota Library Network).

American Nurses Association standards publications. (Reference RT85.5)
Numerous ANA standards publications are shelved in the reference collection.

Annual Review of Nursing Research. (RT81.5 .A66)
This annual publication presents articles that review important research that was published during the last several years. This series is shelved in the circulating collection on the upper level of the library.

Appleton & Lange's Drug Guide. (Reference RS157 .A66)
Drug information for health care providers.

Atlas of Human Anatomy. (Reference QM25 .N46 1997)
An anatomical atlas based on the color illustrations of Dr. Frank Netter.

Body Guide.
Pictorial guide to various systems of the body: skin, muscular, cardiovascular, etc.

Clinical Companion to Medical-Surgical Nursing. (Reference RT41 .M489)
Provides concise information for nurses and nursing students caring for patients with a variety of clinical problems.

Code of Ethics for Nurses: With Interpretive Statements. (American Nurses Association) (Reference RT85 . C63)

Conn's Current Therapy. (Reference RM101 .C844)
An annual publication that provides concise, authoritative information about treatment.

Daily Health News
Daily news coverage of medical breakthroughs, healthcare trends, nutrition, prevention, etc., from expert medical journalists.

Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses. (Reference RM301.12 .D44 1999)
Practical information regarding the safe and effective administration and monitoring of drug therapy for nurses.

A Dictionary of Nursing Theory and Research. (Reference RT81.5 .P69)
Presents definitions and discussions of terms commonly encountered in nursing science literature.

Diseases. (Reference R130.5 .D57)
An eight-volume guide to basic information on causes, symptoms, treatments, and history of diseases.

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. (Information Desk R121 .D6)
A comprehensive dictionary of medical terminology.

Drug Information.
Access patient information on over 1,000 prescription drugs and view a "drug interactions" tool.

Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing & Allied Health. (Reference RT21 .G353)
This five-volume encyclopedia presents over 850 entries providing in-depth information on specific diseases and disorders, tests and procedures, equipment and tools, body systems, nursing and allied health professions, and current health issues.  Designed for nursing and allied health students, this encyclopedia attempts to fill the gap between information intended for laypeople and information intended for medical professionals.

Gray's Anatomy. (Reference QM23.2 .G73)
A classic work providing illustrations and text about human anatomy.

Lippincott's Pocket Manual of Nursing Practice. (Reference RT51 .N377)
Presents comprehensive assessment, treatment, and nursing intervention information on the most common medical-surgical, pediatric, psychiatric, and maternity conditions.

Macmillan Health Encyclopedia. (Reference RA776 .M174)
A nine-volume set that provides basic information on how the body works, the causes and treatment of hundreds of diseases, the importance of diet and exercise, key issues in emotional health, use and abuse of legal and illegal drugs, and more.

Magill's Medical Guide, Health and Illness. (Reference RC41 .M34)
This six-volume set presents an overview of the health care field including major disorders or diseases and the basic medical sciences and professions.

Martindale: The Complete Drug Reference. (Reference RS141.3 .M32)
Previously titled Martindale: The Extra Pharmacopeia, this reference volume provides unbiased evaluated information on the drugs and medicines used throughout the world.

Medical and Health Annual. (Reference R5 .M38)
An annual survey and review of health and health care from Britannica.

The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy. (Reference RC55 .M4)
Provides useful clinical information about diagnosis and treatment to health care professionals. It covers almost every disease that affects humans in specialties such as pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dermatology, and dentistry, and special situations such as burns, heat disorders, radiation reactions and injuries, and sports injuries.

Merck Manual of Medical Information - Home Edition Online.
This online reference book is based almost entirely on the text of The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, commonly referred to as The Merck Manual. Some information, such as descriptions of heart murmurs and the appearance of diseased tissue under a microscope, hasn't been retained because lay readers aren't likely to listen to heart murmurs or examine tissue specimens. Some details of drug treatments have also been deleted, because drug selection and dosing instructions vary far too much. However, a chapter on over-the-counter drugs has been added. In-depth information about diseases, their causes, their recognition, and their treatment has been retained, and the harsh realities pertaining to incurable diseases and the risks of therapy have not been softened.

Mosby's Medical, Nursing, & Allied Health Dictionary.

This electronic, web-based, dictionary provides definitions of medical terms.

Mosby's Nursing Drug Reference. (Reference RM301.12 .M67 1999)
Drug information for nurses including action, uses, dosage, side effects, interactions, nursing considerations, and more.

National League for Nursing publications.
The library has a standing order for NLN publications. They can be located using the SDLN Catalog (South Dakota Library Network).

Patient's Guide to Medical Tests. (Reference RC71 .P38)
Patient-friendly information about medical tests. See also Healthopedia.com

Peterson's Guide to Nursing Programs. (Reference RT79 .P48)
Presents information about baccalaureate and graduate nursing education programs in the U.S. and Canada.

Physicians Desk Reference. (Latest edition Reference RS75 .P51, 2nd latest Upper Level RS75 .P51)
The PDR presents essential information on major pharmaceutical products.

Physicians Desk Reference for Nonprescription Drugs. (Reference RM671 .A1P5)
The PDR for nonprescription drugs.

Resumes for Nursing Careers. (Reference RT82 .R47)
Presents sample resumes and cover letters.

Stedman's Medical Dictionary. (Information Desk R121 .S8)

USPDI, Vol. 1, Drug Information for the Health Care Professional, Vol. 2, Advice for the Patient.
(Reference RM300 . U83, Vol. II)  The US Pharmacopeia provides authoritative drug information for health care professionals.

World Health Statistics Annual. (Reference RA651 .A485)
