A list of World Wide Web sites that are relevant to modern languages  is provided below. Also provided is a link to a list of Web search engines and directories that may be used to look for other relevant sites on the Web. Caution: The World Wide Web provides access to much useful information. However, users should carefully evaluate the quality of each Web resource consulted. Not all Web pages are objective, authoritative, or accurate. 

General Sites:

Association for Hispanic Classical Theater, Inc. -- This page links to a collection of unannotated primary texts regarding Golden Age drama. There are also graphics and a general bibliography.

Bibliotéque Rèfèrence Virtuelle -- This page offers many resources in French. The pages linked from this site were chosen by librarians and is hosted by the Ottawa (Ontario, Canada) Public Library.

British Broadcasting Channel Languages Online -- This page has links to language courses on the web at several levels and in several languages. A very useful link is the news features in French and Spanish with language notes link. These stories are full text with lists of vocabulary, grammatical notes, and audio.

 

Cervantes Project --This site offers an online bibliography of Cervantes as well as digital editions of his works (some both is Spanish and English). There is also a picture gallery with images of Cervantes and many artworks depicting his works.

Ethnologue -- This site gives information about languages. It includes many languages not found in most places such as Pitjantjatjara from Australia.

French Connection -- This site offers a wide variety of French related resources. The content is appropriate for beginners through advanced researchers and includes information on history, current events, language and literature (including links to electronic texts in French), etc.

Gate2Home -- This site is a virtual keyboard that allows the user to convert any keyboard to another language. There is a virtual keyboard on the screen that allows the user to type in another language.

German Studies Web: Literature Resources -- This site has links to both primary and secondary literary resources. There are links to online catalogs at several major international research libraries.

iLoveLanguages -- This site provides links to other sites and to products for learning or teaching many different languages.

Language Links -- This site offers materials for teachers or learners of languages. The languages included are those offered at the University of Wisconsin.

Learn Spanish -- This site has many links to Spanish learning tools. There are quizzes that provide immediate feedback, drills to help students practice vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, and humorous sections such as "Top 10 Phrases That Don't Translate Well."

MDBG Chinese English Dictionary -- This online Chinese Dictionary won a best web site award from the American Library Association in 2007.

OneLook Dictionaries -- This site features definitions in French, German, Spanish and Italian.

 

Online Goethe Language Tests -- Multilingual vocabulary exercises / language tests in Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

 

Princeton Dante Project -- This site includes audio of Lino Pertile (Harvard University) reading each canto of Dante's Commedia in Italian. The full text of Commedia is available in both Italian and English - either one language at a time or both together.

 

Project Runeberg -- 200 works of Nordic literature, art and music.

 

Reading Strategies for Foreign Languages -- This site is designed to give strategies for those reading in a language they are not fluent in.

Reading Women Writers and African Literature -- This site gives biographical information on African women writers. There are also some unpublished texts available through the site. It can be navigated by author's name, by picture or by geographical area (complete with maps). Most of the text is in French but many have English translations available.

RussNet -- This site provides resources for teaching and learning Russian.

Tennessee Bob's Famous French Links -- This site provides links to other sites of interest to a wide variety of users from French language students to business people to tourists.

Web of Online Dictionaries -- Scroll down to view foreign language dictionaries.

Women Writers Project -- This site provides the full texts from women writing in the period 1400 to 1850. It also offers a link to Renaissance Women Online which provides the full texts of renaissance women writers.

WordReference -- This dictionary for French, Spanish, and Italian won an award for best web site from the American Library Association in 2007.
