Guide to Mechanical Engineering Research

Most Useful Databases

Engineering Village - Compendex (1970+)
Compendex is the world's premier engineering abstracts database. Sources include journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports in all areas of engineering.

Web Of Science - Science Citation Index. (1992+)
A multidisciplinary database of citations and abstracts from journal literature.  It can be used as a conventional author-subject index, or it can be searched by cited author or paper.  It covers an extremely large amount of scientific literature.

INSPEC (1969+)
INSPEC, from the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE), is the world's leading abstracts database covering the literature of physics, electronics and electrical engineering, telecommunications, computers, control technology and information technology.

IEEE Xplore
Provides full-text access to all IEEE journals.

South Dakota Library Network Catalog.
Lists the holdings of over 40 libraries in South Dakota.

Other Useful Databases

Current Contents (1993+)
This multidisciplinary, current awareness resource provides indexing and tables of contents to over 6,000 journals covering a broad range of disciplines.

ASTM Standards via the Web
Available on a specific workstation in the reference area of the library. This service provides the full-text of current standards published by the American Society for Testing Materials.  Ask for help at the information desk.

Dissertation Abstracts International.
This resource provides a subject, title, and author guide to over 1.2 million doctoral dissertations written since 1861 and masters theses written since the 1980's.

Dissertations & Theses at South Dakota State University
Current research provides access to the full-text (PDF) of recent dissertations and theses completed at SDSU. When accessing, at the ProQuest page, click on the "Select Multiple Databases" link, then select the "Dissertations & Theses" databases.

EBSCO MegaFile. (EBSCOhost)
EBSCO MegaFILE
is a multi-disciplinary database providing full text for nearly 12,000 total publications and indexing & abstracting for more than 16,000 publications. Coverage spans every area of academic study and general interest subject area and offers information dating as far back as the 1800s. In addition, the database contains more than 84,000 biographies, 86,000 primary source documents, 10,000 company profiles and an image collection of more than 107,000 photos, maps and flags. MegaFILE is comprised of EBSCO's Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, MasterFILE Premier and Regional Business News databases. This database is updated daily on EBSCOhost.

ProQuest.
Like InfoTrac, this resource provides access to several different bibliographic and full-text databases covering a wide variety of disciplines and topics.

LexisNexis Academic.
Provides online access to full-text and bibliographic information from newspapers, news and business magazines, newsletters, wire services, broadcast transcripts, and biographical sources.

Journals

The Magazines and Journals List contains information about all the journals Briggs Library holds in print format and all the journals the library provides digitally. Each journal entry will provide either a call number to locate the journal on the library shelves or links for digital access to the journal, or both.

   To find a specific journal:

  • Type the title of the journal (or selected keywords from the journal title) in the "Title" search box at the top of the "Titles" tab.
  • Click the appropriate radio button, i.e., title starts with the words, contains the words anywhere in the title, or the exact complete title was entered.
  • Click the "Go" button.

To find a list of all mechanical engineering-related journals

  • Click on the "Subjects" tab.
  • Select "Engineering" from the "Category" menu.
  • Select "Mechanical Engineering" or from the "SubCategory" menu.
  • Click the "Go" button.

Books, Videos, etc.

The Library Catalog lists the books, videos, and other monographic holdings of Briggs Library and many other libraries in South Dakota.  The catalog provides the call number to locate the items on the library shelves and indicates whether the items are available or on loan.

General Engineering Links

Engineering & Technology (EINet Galaxy) -- Covers several engineering domains, with growing sets of links to directories and academic organizations.

ICE - Internet Connections for Engineering (Cornell University) -- An index to resources in all areas of engineering, also with links to chemistry, mathematics, physics, and earth sciences. Both keyword searchable and classified by broad subject area. Standards, patents, grants, and internet e-journals also included. Available as part of the Physical Sciences, Engineering, Computing & Math InfoMine.

NSSN: A National Resource For Global Standards -- Provides Title and document number indexing for over 250,000 standards from over 600 developers world wide. Basic service includes industry, international (ISO) and U.S. Government Standards. The basic service does not include industry, international, or U.S. Government Standards under development.

SciCentral -- A well-organized site offering access to all types of engineering resources. Includes a search engine.

Science: Engineering (Yahoo) -- A well-organized place to browse, Yahoo relies on Internet sites voluntarily listing themselves with their service, though they also seek out sites on their own. Some (but not all) resources are annotated.

Science.gov -- Science.gov searches over 36 databases and 1,850 selected websites, offering 200 million pages of authoritative U.S. government science information, including research and development results.
