A list of World Wide Web sites that are relevant to European Studies  is provided below. Also provided is a link to a list of Web search engines and directories that may be used to look for other relevant sites on the Web. Caution: The World Wide Web provides access to much useful information. However, users should carefully evaluate the quality of each Web resource consulted. Not all Web pages are objective, authoritative, or accurate. 

General Sites:

  • Ethnologue -- This site is a directory of languages of the world.

  • EuroDocs -- This site supplies links to primary historical documents from Western Europe. The texts are unevenly distributed over areas and time periods as the available documents are unevenly distributed.

  • French Connection -- This site offers a wide variety of French related resources. The content is appropriate for beginners through advanced researchers and includes information on history, current events, language and literature (including links to electronic texts in French), etc.

  • French 17 -- Bibliography of research into France in the 17th Century.

  • German Studies Web: Literature Resources -- This site has links to both primary and secondary literary resources. There are links to online catalogs at several major international research libraries.

  • Nazi and East German Propaganda -- This is a well organized site with links to propaganda from the German Democratic Republic and the Nazi regime.

  • OneLook Dictionaries- definitions in French, German, Spanish and Italian.
  • Periodical Historical Atlas of Europe -- There is at least one map per century from 1 to 1700 CE showing political boundaries and some cities in this online atlas.
  • Project Runeberg -- 200 works of Nordic literature, art and music.

  • Reading Women Writers and African Literature -- This site gives biographical information on African women writers. There are also some unpublished texts available through the site. It can be navigated by author's name, by picture or by geographical area (complete with maps). Most of the text is in French but many have English translations available.

  • Tennessee Bob's Famous French Links -- This site provides links to other sites of interest to a wide variety of users from French language students to business people to tourists.

  • Victorian Web -- This site has essays, excerpts from primary sources, time lines, bibliographies and images on many subject areas. All the sources relate to the 19th century.

  • WESSWEB -- This site is compiled and maintained by the Western European Specialists Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries. They have compiled sources useful to those studying Western Europe in an easily navigable fasion.
