The following reference sources provide information relevant to education topics.  They are available in the Hilton M. Briggs Library collection or via the web if indicated.

Reference Books

Almanac of Higher Education. (Reference LB2310 .A52)
Provides an overview of the health and financing of U.S. higher education as well as state-by-state reports on demographics, political leadership, and key statistics about faculty, students, costs, and spending. Includes maps, tables, and charts.

Annual Report of Academic Progress. (Reference LB1062.6 .A55 & on the web at The South Dakota Department of Education & Cultural Affairs)
Published by the SD Dept. of Education & Cultural Affairs, this reference work is an annual written evaluation of the educational progress in the state and in each school district.

Condition of Education. (Government Documents ED 1.109:)
Presents statistical information on 60 indicators relating to progress, emerging issues, and ongoing policy debate in education. Essays and supplemental tables are also included.

Dictionary of Education. (Reference LB15 .G6)
Provides definitions for technical and professional terms.

Digest of Education Statistics. (Online and Information Desk ED1.326:)
An annual publication providing statistical information covering the broad field of American education from kindergarten through graduate school. Includes number of schools and colleges, teachers, enrollments, finances, Federal funds for education, employment and income of graduates, etc.

Education: A Guide to Reference and Information Sources. (Reference LB17 .B89)

Provides information about key information resources in the field of education divided in fourteen categories reflecting different aspects of education.

 

Education and Technology: An Encyclopedia. (Reference LB1028.3 .E17)

This two volume set features 200 articles from 120 authors regarding seven categories related to educational technology. Volume 2 includes a glossary, index, and list of contributors.

Education in South Dakota: A Statistical Profile.
Published annually by the South Dakota Department of Education & Cultural Affairs. It covers a wide variety of statistics related to education in South Dakota, including average salaries, finances, enrollment, and profiles of school districts.

Education Law. (Reference KF4115 .R36)
A nationally oriented work comprising authoritative analysis of federal and state statutes and cases affecting public and private educational institutions at all levels including topics such as: banning of books, school prayer, dealing with students afflicted with AIDS, tax-exempt status for parochial schools, funding accreditations, tort liability, guidance on collective bargaining strategies, drafting codes of student conduct and conducting student searches. This reference includes all updates, supplements, and revisions.

Educational Media and Technology Yearbook. (Reference LB1028.3 .E371)
This reference book is to inform readers about the purposes, activities, programs of study, and accomplishments of organizations and associations dedicated to the advancement of educational communications and technology.

Encyclopedia of Education. (Reference LB15 .E47)
Over 1,000 articles covering the history, research, philosophy, and practice of education, each including a bibliography.

Encyclopedia of Educational Research. (Reference LB15 .E495)
This four-volume reference work has its entries organized under 16 broad topic headings providing critical syntheses and interpretations of reported research on most aspects of education, each with an extensive bibliography.

The Encyclopedia of Learning Disabilities. (Reference LC4704.5 .T86)

This reference covers three key areas: learning disabilities and treatment; legal discussions of relevant topics, and school related elements.

The Encyclopedia of Team-Building Activities. (Reference HD66 .E52)

The Facts on File Dictionary of Education. (Reference LB15 .S43)
An alphabetical listing of language peculiar to the education profession.

Handbook of Educational Psychology. (Reference LB1051 .H2354)
Provides historical knowledge and new concepts in an attempt to illustrate how educational psychology and educational practice relate.

International Encyclopedia of Education. (Reference LB15 .I569)
This ten-volume reference work presents 1,448 well-documented articles attempting to provide an international overview of all major aspects of education.

International Higher Education: An Encyclopedia. (Reference LB15 .I59)
The first volume of this two-volume reference provides 67 long articles on selected topics. The second volume covers regions of the world and selected countries.

International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences. (Reference H41.I58 2001). 26 vols.
This 2001 encyclopedia provides a comprehensive updated description of sociology and related fields.  Published thirty-three years after the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences this set reviews the origins and development of the various disciplines and adds coverage of the growth and specialization of knowledge since the 1960s, the development of interdisciplinary fields, the expansion of policy and applications, the internationalization of research, the impact of the computer and information revolutions on theory and practice, and the connections between the social and behavioral sciences and the biological life sciences. 

South Dakota Educational Directory. (Information Desk LB2803 .S6 A3)
Lists information on each school district in South Dakota such as mailing address enrollment number of teachers, and administrative personnel.

Teacher's Almanac. (Reference L101 .U6 T423)
An annual compilation of statistics, charts, rankings, and lists.

Theories and Models in Applied Behavioral Science. (Reference HD31 .T4857)

Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors. (Information Desk Z695.1.E3 E342)
Not an indexing or an abstracting publication, but a guide to the subject headings (descriptors) that are used in the  ERIC database.

West's Education Law Reporter. (Legal KF4110.A2 W47)
This periodical reference features synopses of cases that have recently been received by West, cumulative tables of cases reported, key topic analysis, key number index, complete texts of cases, and commentaries.

West's Education Law Digest. (Legal KF4110.3 .W47)
Includes Education cases decided in the United States Supreme Court, United States Courts of Appeals, United States District Courts, and State Appellate Courts.
