The following reference sources provide information relevant to criminal justice topics.  They are available the Hilton M. Briggs Library collection or via the web if indicated.

Electronic Reference Sources

Annual Review of Sociology. (Books/Upper Level HM1.A763).
Reviews current research in the broad spectrum of sociology. This resource is also available online as well.

Extremist Groups: Information for Students. 2006. (Available via Gale Virtual Reference Library under Social Sciences) This source provides an overview of extremist groups anywhere in the world that are active today.

The National Juvenile Court Data Archive. (Government Documents J 32.21:66) Data sets from this source are available online.

Oxford Handbook of Criminology. 2002. (Available via Academic Search Premier) This source is intended as a textbook for an introduction to criminology course. It concentrates on British criminology so it has a slightly different slant than many American criminology textbooks.

The Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics. brings together data about all aspects of criminal justice in the United States presented in over 600 tables from more than 100 sources. The paper editions are available in the library (most recent edition at the Information Desk J29.9/6:998 and older editions in the Documents collection on the lower level).

Terrorism: Essential Primary Sources. 2006. (Available via Gale Virtual Reference Library under Social Sciences)  This volume of primary source documents from the Social Issues Primary Source Collection focuses on the issue of terrorism in the last three centuries. International in scope, this volume contains approximately 200 documents, such as speeches, magazine and newspaper articles, memoirs, letters, interviews, novels, essays, and much more.

The Uniform Crime Reports present crime statistics reported by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. They are published by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice. UCR is available on the web via the link above.  The most recent paper edition of UCR is shelved under J1.14/7: at the Information Desk and older editions are shelved in the Documents collection on the lower level.

Specifies the kind of writing style and manuscript organization expected for publication in ASA journals.

The Blackwell Dictionary of Sociology. (Reference HM17.J64 1995)

Comparative Social Research. (Books/Upper Level HM1.C642).
An annual publication of interdisciplinary, thematic volumes.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Sociology. (Reference HM17.C66 1994)

Crime and Justice: A Review of the Literature. (Books/Upper Level VH6001 .C672)

Reviews current research in the broad spectrum of crime and criminal justice.

Criminal Justice Information: How to Find It, How to Use It. (Reference HV7419.5.C75 1998)

Dictionary of American Criminal Justice. (Reference HV7411.C53 1998)
This dictionary is divided into two sections. The dictionary section provides brief definitions of key terms and concepts from criminology, criminal justice, corrections, probation/parole, juvenile justice, policing, and other areas. The court cases section provides information about important U.S. Supreme Court Cases.

Encyclopedia of American Prisons. (Reference HV9471.S54 2003)
This reference covers the history and current operations of American prison systems including subjects such as specific prison histories, correctional officers, drug and alcohol use and abuse, and many others.

The Encyclopedia of Crime and Justice. (Reference HV6017.E52 1983)
This source covers many topics on the nature and causes of different kinds of criminal behavior including subjects such as juvenile justice, organized crime, race and crime, rural crime, and many others.

The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Sociology. (Reference HM17.E529 1991).

Encyclopedia of Sociology. (Reference HM425.E5 2000). 5 vols.
397 articles covering the social sciences area, includes bibliographies.

Encyclopedia of World Crime: Criminal Justice, Criminology, and Law Enforcement. (6 volumes, Reference HV6017.E54)

International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. (Reference H40.A2I5).
Classic articles covering most social science disciplines and topics.

OJJDP Juvenile Justice Bulletin. (Government Documents J 32.10:)

South Dakota Crime in Perspective. (Reference HV6793.S8 S69 2007) Collection of crime and criminal justice statistics from South Dakota.

South Dakota Courts: The State of the Judiciary and Annual Report of the South Dakota Unified Judicial System. 1991+. (most recent edition in Reference KFS3570.A862; older editions on Upper Level KFS3570.A862)

South Dakota Legal Research Guide (Reference KFS3075>J67 1998) A guide to help research in South Dakota law.

Sociology: A Guide to Reference and Information Sources (Reference HM585.A29 2005) A guide to help research topics in sociology including crime and criminal justice.

Survey of Social Sciences: Sociology Series. (Reference HM17.S86 1994).
A five-volume set of articles relating to sociology.
