Guide to Chemistry - Databases

Most Useful Databases

SciFinder Scholar
Provides extensive coverage of the literature of chemistry and the life sciences including biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, medicine, and related disciplines.

AGRICOLA 1970+
AGRICOLA is produced by the National Agricultural Library and it provides bibliographic access to the literature of agriculture and allied sciences including much information about agricultural chemicals. It indexes articles, books, theses, patents, software, and audiovisual materials. Older agricultural literature can be identified using the paper volumes of the Bibliography of Agriculture (1942-1997) shelved on the main floor at Index 630.35061 .Un3.01.

American Chemical Society Publications
The American Chemical Society--the world's largest scientific society--is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress and is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences.  The American Chemical Society Publications Division currently publishes 35 leading peer-reviewed journals in the chemical and related sciences, including the Journal of American Chemical Society, as well as Chemical & Engineering News, the Society's weekly news magazine.

CAB Abstracts 1984+
The CAB Abstracts database provides worldwide coverage of the literature of agriculture and related areas, including plant breeding, plant pathology, field crops, grasslands and forage, and soils and fertilizers. Journals, monographs, conferences, books, annual reports, and other sources from more than 100 countries are scanned regularly for inclusion in the CAB Abstracts database. Many articles of interest to chemists and biochemists are included.

Web of Science
Provides access to Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index.  It allows very sophisticated searching including cited reference searching. For a broader search, click on the All Databases tab.

Ei Compendex Web
Engineering Village 2 is the world's premiere engineering abstracts database. Sources include journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports in all areas of engineering. Site also contains searchable link to US Patent Office Files (USPTO) (full text from 1976).  Older paper volumes of this resource are shelved as Engineering Index on the main floor at Abstracts 620.5 .En332.

Medline
This National Library of Medicine bibliographic database indexes biomedical literature, including research, clinical practice, administration, policy issues, and health care services.

Global Science Gateway - WorldWideScience.org
DOE and the British Library, along with eight other participating countries, recently opened an online global gateway to science information from 15 national portals. This gateway was developed and is maintained by the DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information
to accelerate scientific discovery and progress through a multilateral partnership to enable federated searching of national and international scientific databases

Potentially Useful Paper Resources

Analytical Abstracts 1954+ (Abstracts 543.05 .AN14)
This monthly publication of the Royal Society of Chemistry covers worldwide literature on all branches of analytical chemistry. The fully searchable web version contains over one-third of a million records from 1980 to date and is updated weekly.

Applied Science and Technology Index 1913-1998 (Index 605 .AP58)
This source indexes, and provides article abstracts for, about 200 leading journals and magazines in the physical sciences, engineering and many manufacturing processes.

Chemical Abstracts 1907+ (Abstracts 540.5 .C42)
This resource is the most comprehensive abstracting service in the English language covering the world's chemical literature including biochemistry, organic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, applied chemistry, chemical engineering, and all other areas of chemistry. Indexing by author, subject, chemical substance, ring system, molecular formula, patent, and keyword is provided. The electronic version of Chemical Abstracts is available in the Chemistry Department. A fee may be applied for electronic searches. Briggs Library holds the paper volumes of Chemical Abstracts from 1907 through 1999, shelved on the main floor at Abstracts 540.5 .C42.
