Merck Manual of Medical Information - Home Edition Online.
This online reference book is based almost entirely on the text of The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, commonly referred to as The Merck Manual. It contains nearly all the information in The Merck Manual. Some information, such as descriptions of heart murmurs and the appearance of diseased tissue under a microscope, hasn't been retained because lay readers aren't likely to listen to heart murmurs or examine such tissue specimens. Some details of drug treatments have also been deleted, because drug selection and dosing instructions vary far too much among specific situations to provide such information reliably. However, a great deal of treatment information is given in relation to each disease discussed, and a chapter on over-the-counter drugs has been added to the Drugs section. In-depth information about diseases, their causes, their recognition, and their treatment has been retained, and the harsh realities pertaining to incurable diseases and the risks of therapy have not been softened.

Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology. (Reference QR9 .S56 2001)
