The following databases and paper indexing and abstracting publications may be used to locate articles relevant to biology  in journals, magazines, conference proceedings, books, and other sources.  Contact a librarian (688-5570 or 800-786-2038) for more information or if off-campus access is denied to a current SDSU student, faculty member, or staff member.

Biological Abstracts. 1926+ .
This database provides comprehensive bibliographic coverage of the biological sciences.   Access data after 1996 via the web.  Older paper volumes of this title are shelved on the library's main floor in the Abstracts & Indexes area (570.5 B52).

Biological & Agricultural Index. 1916-1998.
Indexes selected scholarly journals in most areas of agriculture and biological disciplines.
Paper volumes of this title are shelved on the library's main floor in the Abstracts & Indexes area (630.5 AG81).

Biological Sciences Database. Current year plus previous five years.
This interdisciplinary database, produced by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, includes abstracts and citations in biomedicine, biotechnology, zoology and ecology, and some aspects of agriculture and veterinary science. 

Biology Digest. 1989+ .
Abstracts recent science articles and research reports. Paper volumes (1974-1988) of this title are shelved on the library's main floor in the Abstracts & Indexes area (574.08 B52).

Medline.
This National Library of Medicine database is the the premier bibliographic database covering medical journal literature including many articles of interest to biology. (Also accessible via the National Library of Medicine at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) . 

Academic Search Premier. (EBSCOhost)
Academic Search Premier, designed specifically for academic institutions, is the world's largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for more than 4,600 scholarly publications, including more than 3,500 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for all 8,040 journals in the collection. This scholarly collection offers information in nearly every area of academic study including: social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies, and many more. 

Chemical Abstracts. 1907+
Abstracts the World's literature on chemistry and related fields. Scifinder Scholar provides online access to Chemical Abstracts. Ask for help at the Information Desk to access this database in the library.  Access is limited to SDSU students and employees due to license restrictions. Paper volumes of this title are shelved on the library's main floor in the Abstracts & Indexes area (540.5 C42).

Current Contents.
This multidisciplinary, current awareness resource provides indexing and tables of contents to over 6,000 journals covering a broad range of disciplines. Many biological journals are included in this database. 

Dissertation Abstracts International.
This resource provides a subject, title, and author guide to over 1.2 million abstracts of doctoral dissertations and masters theses written since 1861.  

Dissertation Abs: Current - SDSU provides access to the full text (pdf) of recent dissertations and these completed at SDSU.

Science Citation Index 1992+, (via Web of Science).
This multidisciplinary database of citations and abstracts from journal literature can be used as a conventional author-subject index, or it can be searched by cited author or paper. Access this database via Web of Science for citations from 1992 to the present. Prior years (1965-1990) are available in paper shelved on the library's main floor in the Abstracts & Indexes area (016.5 .Sci27).

Zoological Record. 1915-2001.
Comprehensive index to worldwide zoological publications. 27 separate sections by animal group, i.e. mammalia, insecta, etc. Paper volumes of this title are shelved on the library's main floor in the Abstracts & Indexes area (016.59 Zo75).

Other Databases, Periodical Indexes and Abstracts

AGRICOLA. 1970+
AGRICOLA is produced by the National Agricultural Library and it provides bibliographic access to the literature of agriculture and allied sciences. It indexes articles, books, theses, patents, software, and audiovisual materials. Ecology, physiology, genetics and diseases of plants and animals are covered. Also soil biology, aquatic biology, and other topics related to the life sciences are included.  Older agricultural literature can be identified using the paper volumes of the Bibliography of Agriculture (1942-1997) shelved on the library's main floor in the Abstracts &t Indexes area (630.35061 .Un3.01).

CAB Abstracts. 1984+.
The CAB Abstracts database provides worldwide coverage of the literature of agriculture and related areas, including plant breeding, plant pathology, field crops, grasslands and forage, and soils and fertilizers. Journals, monographs, conferences, books, annual reports, and other sources from more than 100 countries are scanned regularly for inclusion in the CAB Abstracts database. 

Greenfile.
A bibliographic database of information about environmental concerns such as, global warming, energy conservation, natural resources, and pollution. It covers content going back more than 35 years and contains backfiles to volume one, issue one for Bioscience, Journal of Environmental Planning & Management , Journal of Ecology, and Conservation Biology.

Human Reproduction Update. 1995+.
Formerly the Bibliography of Reproduction (1963-1994), this source indexes literature concerned with the study of reproductive biology in vertebrates. Also available via Ebsco Online. Indexes (1995-1999) are shelved on the library's main floor in the Abstracts & Indexes area (574.1605.B4712) and abstracts on CD-ROM are available on reserve.

JSTOR.
Provides electronic full text/image access to the back issues of more than 100 scholarly journals in many fields including biology, botany, and ecology.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe.
Provides online access to full-text and bibliographic information from newspapers, news and business magazines, newsletters, wire services, broadcast transcripts, and biographical sources. 

Ingenta.
A database indexing the contents of thousands of journals and magazines in a wide range of disciplines including the biological sciences.

Bibliography of Bioethics. 1975+ (Abstracts & Indexes 016.1742 .WA17)
An annual publication providing access to print and non-print literature about ethical issues in the biological and health sciences.
