When is it Okay to Use Images from the Internet?

When searching the Internet, you should always assume that any image you come across is copyrighted, unless stated otherwise underneath the image or on the web site.  Most web sites provide detailed information and guidelines for the use of images contained on the site.  If an image is labeled as being in the "public domain" then it is available for public use.  Many web sites also allow use of images for non-commercial or educational purposes only.  It is your responsibility to follow the guidelines for use of images from individual web sites.  This library web guide contains a compilation of many Internet sites offering images in the public domain, or free for use.  Some of the sites ask that you provide credit to the web site in addition to a link back to the original location.

The University of Maryland, Maryland College, has created an excellent guide on Copyright and Fair Use in the Classroom, on the Internet, and the World Wide Web. located at:  http://www.umuc.edu/library/copy.html#no

If you have questions or concerns about whether or not it is okay to use an image off of the Internet, how to obtain permission for an image, or need more information on copyright, stop by the Hilton M. Briggs Library Information Desk, call (605)688-5955 or e-mail:  http://lib.sdstate.edu/forms/InformationReq.html .
