Background

This appears to be a collection of commissioned works, created sometime in the 1960’s or 1970’s according to the organization’s web site. These were most likely done in the later part of that period, as evidenced by the citation on the picture of Lincoln Hall as the “Lincoln Music Hall” – the library had already shifted, so this was after 1975 or so. Given this date, the painting of Old North (razed in 1962) was very likely done from a photograph, as the others also may have been reproduced.

Arrangement  and Content

From verso of Coughlin Campanile print: “This GRAY’S WATERCOLOR is an original print created by an award winning artist at . We trust it depicts a scene of special personal interest to you.

The process by which it was created is unique. Each step was by hand. Our artist created several originals, from which the very best were selected. Then, through a process similar to that of Currier & Ives just before the turn of the century, a plate was made of the monochrome of the original, and a limited number of copies were printed.

A team of artisans, working under the original artist’s close supervision, then applied the watercolors to each print by hand. Each Print was then matted and inspected for quality. The result: Your print is a handpainted work of art that matches the original in every particular. It is unique and it is a limited edition: as such it offers an investment potential as well as adding distinction to any décor.”
