Most Items Are NOT Subject to Overdue Fines:

Overdue fines will not be applied for the following types of overdue materials:

·       Materials from the main circulating collection (item class 1)

·       Circulating Government Documents (item class 6)

·       Curriculum Materials (item class 7)

Consequences of Overdue Materials

  • Overdue Notices
    • An overdue notice will be sent one day after an item becomes overdue.
    • If the item is not returned a second overdue notice will be sent 13 days after the first notice was sent.
  • Suspension of Library Borrowing Privileges
    • All library borrowing privileges (including reserve materials) and interlibrary loan privileges will be suspended for anyone (student, faculty or staff) who has one or more items overdue, the suspension occurring immediately upon the item becoming overdue.  These privileges will remain suspended until all overdue items are returned or renewed.  NOTE:  Faculty, students and staff can self-renew items online, but only faculty can self-renew overdue items online.
    • All library borrowing privileges (including reserve materials) and interlibrary loan privileges will be suspended for anyone (student, faculty or staff) who has been billed for an item that has not been returned or paid for.   These privileges will remain suspended for anyone who owes library fees or fines of $5.00 or more (generated by items on the next page below, which will remain subject to fines).
    • NOTE: There will be no block on electronic literature access.
  • Bill for Cost of the Overdue Item
    • If an overdue item is not returned within 30 days after the due date the patron will be billed for the cost of the item plus a processing fee of $10.00 per item.
    • When an item is returned after a bill has been issued the cost of the item will be forgiven.  However, students and guest patrons (but not faculty or staff) will remain responsible for the processing fee of $10.00 per item.  The processing fee will be forgiven for SDSU faculty and staff if the overdue item is returned.

Some Items Will Remain Subject to Overdue Fines:

Overdue fines will be applied to the following types of overdue materials:

·       Any items that have been recalled for use by another patron.

·       Any items for which special borrowing permission is required.

·       Reference Materials (item class 02)

·       Reserve Materials (item classes 20-25)

·       Interlibrary Loan Materials [Faculty fines apply.]

·       South Dakota Room Materials (item class 10)

·       Serials (item class 05)

·       Serials Indexes (item class 12)

·       Serials Abstracts (item class 11)

Consequences of Overdue Fined Materials

  • Overdue Fines for Reserve Items
    • Two hour, two hour/overnight, and four hour reserve items - 25 cents per hour per item.  If these items are returned when the library is not open, the fines continue to accrue on our computer until the library opens and the items are checked in.
    • Three day and one week reserve items – $1.00 per day per item.
    • Reserve materials should not be returned to the outdoor book drop.  Overdue reserve items returned to the outdoor book drop will accrue fines until they are retrieved and discharged by library staff.  The outdoor book drop is normally emptied once at the beginning of each workday.
    • The maximum overdue fine (not including replacement cost) is $30.00 per item.
  • Overdue Fines for All Other Items That Are Subject to Fines
    • All other materials that are subject to overdue fines incur fines of $1.00 per day per item.
    • The outdoor library book drop is normally emptied once at the beginning of each workday.  Overdue fines for items returned to the outdoor book drop (except reserve items) will continue to accrue until the library’s closing time immediately prior to the date the items are removed from the book drop.
    • The maximum overdue fine (not including replacement cost) is $30.00 per item.
  • Suspension of Library Borrowing Privileges
    • All library borrowing privileges (including reserve materials) and interlibrary loan privileges will be suspended for anyone (student, faculty or staff) who has one or more items overdue.  These privileges will remain suspended until all overdue items are returned or renewed.  NOTE:  Faculty, students and staff can self-renew items online, but only faculty can self-renew overdue items online.
    • All library borrowing privileges (including reserve materials) and interlibrary loan privileges will be suspended for anyone who has been billed for an item that has not been returned or paid for or whose fines total $5.00 or more.   These privileges will remain suspended for anyone owing library fees or fines of $5.00 or more.
  • Bill for Cost of the Overdue Item
    • If an overdue item is not returned within 30 days after the due date the patron will be billed for the cost of the item plus a processing fee of $10.00 per item in addition to the accrued fines. Exception: Replacement costs and processing fees will not apply to room keys that are held on reserve.
    • If a patron returns an item after a bill has been issued the cost of the item will be forgiven.  However, all patrons will remain responsible for accrued overdue fines.  Students and guest patrons will also remain responsible for the processing fee ($10.00 per item).  The processing fee will be forgiven for SDSU faculty and staff if the overdue item is returned.

This policy applies to all library users, including students, faculty, staff, and guests.
