Most Items Are NOT Subject to
Overdue Fines:
Overdue fines
will not be applied for the following types of overdue materials:

Materials from the main
circulating collection (item class 1)
·
Circulating Government
Documents (item class 6)
·
Curriculum Materials
(item class 7)
Consequences of Overdue
Materials
- Overdue
Notices
- An
overdue notice will be sent one day after an item becomes
overdue.
- If the
item is not returned a second overdue notice will be sent 13
days after the first notice was sent.

Suspension of Library Borrowing
Privileges
-
All library borrowing
privileges (including reserve materials) and interlibrary
loan privileges will be suspended for anyone (student,
faculty or staff) who has one or more items overdue, the
suspension occurring immediately upon the item becoming
overdue. These privileges will remain suspended until all
overdue items are returned or renewed. NOTE: Faculty,
students and staff can self-renew items online, but only
faculty can self-renew overdue items online.

All library borrowing
privileges (including reserve materials) and interlibrary
loan privileges will be
suspended for anyone (student, faculty or staff)
who has been billed for an
item that has not been returned or paid for.
These
privileges will remain suspended for anyone who owes library
fees or fines of $5.00 or more (generated by items on the
next page below, which will remain subject to fines).

NOTE: There will be no block
on electronic literature access.

Cost of the Overdue Item
-
If an overdue item is not
returned within 30 days after the due date the patron will
be billed for the cost of the item plus a processing fee of
$10.00 per item.

When an item is returned
after a bill has been issued the cost of the item will be
forgiven. However, students and guest patrons (but not
faculty or staff) will remain responsible for the processing
fee of $10.00 per item. The processing fee will be forgiven
for SDSU faculty and staff if the overdue item is returned.
Some Items Will Remain Subject
to Overdue Fines:
Overdue fines
will be applied to the following types of overdue materials:

Any items that have been
recalled for use by another patron.
·
Any items for which
special borrowing permission is required.
·
Reference Materials
(item class 02)
·
Reserve Materials (item
classes 20-25)
·
Interlibrary Loan
Materials [Faculty fines apply.]
·
South Dakota Room
Materials (item class 10)
·
Serials (item class 05)
·
Serials Indexes (item
class 12)
·
Serials Abstracts (item
class 11)
Consequences of Overdue
Fined Materials
- Overdue
Fines for Reserve Items
- Two
hour, two hour/overnight, and four hour reserve items - 25
cents per hour per item. If these items are returned when
the library is not open, the fines continue to accrue on our
computer until the library opens and the items are checked
in.
- Three
day and one week reserve items – $1.00 per day per item.
- Reserve
materials should not be returned to the outdoor book drop.
Overdue reserve items returned to the outdoor book drop will
accrue fines until they are retrieved and discharged by
library staff. The outdoor book drop is normally emptied
once at the beginning of each workday.
- The
maximum overdue fine (not including replacement cost) is
$30.00 per item.
- Overdue
Fines for All Other Items That Are Subject to Fines
- All
other materials that are subject to overdue fines incur
fines of $1.00 per day per item.
- The
outdoor library book drop is normally emptied once at the
beginning of each workday. Overdue fines for items returned
to the outdoor book drop (except reserve items) will
continue to accrue until the library’s closing time
immediately prior to the date the items are removed from the
book drop.

(not including replacement cost) is $30.00 per item.

privileges will remain suspended for anyone owing library
fees or fines of $5.00 or more.

Cost of the Overdue Item
- If an
overdue item is not returned within 30 days after the due
date the patron will be billed for the cost of the item plus
a processing fee of $10.00 per item in addition to the
accrued fines. Exception: Replacement costs and
processing fees will not apply to room keys that are held on
reserve.
- If a
patron returns an item after a bill has been issued the cost
of the item will be forgiven. However, all patrons will
remain responsible for accrued overdue fines. Students and
guest patrons will also remain responsible for the
processing fee ($10.00 per item). The processing fee will
be forgiven for SDSU faculty and staff if the overdue item
is returned.
This policy applies to all library
users, including students, faculty, staff, and guests.

This policy was approved by the Students’ Association because
sufficient student attendance at University Library Committee
meetings could not be obtained.]
